Lord, when your glory appears, my joy will be full. — Psalm 17:15b

Mass Readings: 1 Corinthians 15:12-20/Luke 8:1-3

True Discipleship

It comes across so ordinary and normal in today’s Gospel that it’s truly impossible for us to grasp just how rare and scandalous was Jesus’ association with women in His ministry. Early rabbinic documents from first-century Palestine emphasize that Judaism cautioned against even speaking with women in public. Yet Luke’s description of Jesus the itinerant preacher repeatedly describes not only the company of His 12 apostles, but also that of a group of Galilean women who accompanied Jesus to Jerusalem, were present at His death, and testified to His resurrection, where Mary Magdalene and Joanna are specifically mentioned.

Why were these details important enough to note? Perhaps the answer is simply to stress undeniably that anyone who heard the word of God and obeyed it is a true disciple of Jesus—even women!

Prayer: Open my ears and my heart to Your word, Lord.
