August 29, The Passion of John the Baptist

The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord. — Psalm 33:5

Mass Readings: 1 Corinthians 1:17-25/Mark 6:17-29

Staying Neutral

My wife is now reading another one of Dan Brown’s novels. As you probably know, Brown wrote the famous The Da Vinci Code. This one is called Inferno. I like the ominous quote that begins the book: “The darkest places in hell are reserved for those who maintain their neutrality in times of moral crisis.”

Today we memorialize St. John the Baptist, a man who became a martyr because he couldn’t remain neutral. John shed his blood for truth, and he surely died for Christ. Years later, the Benedictine St. Bede the Venerable wrote of John: “To endure temporal agonies for the sake of the truth was not a heavy burden for such men as John; rather it was easily borne and even desirable, for he knew eternal joy would be his reward.”

Prayer: Lord, we pray that we, too, may work hard for truth and justice, as did your servant, John.
